As without doubt the LEAST worthy person ever interviewed by those giants of crisis communications Tom Mueller and Marc Mullen, I stepped into the ring of their Leading in a Crisis Podcast girded for battle.
A crisis can happen to the best organisation – and it doesn’t have to be a catastrophe to make life difficult for your employees and stakeholders.
After a fairly long career so far on both sides of the journalism/PR divide, one thing that drives me is the need for organisations to test and re-test their crisis response teams in communications as well as procedures. Just rehearsing your operational procedures from time to time is probably not enough.
You may have a red hot press office, and senior managers media-trained to the hilt, but in today’s world of fast moving social channels you need to let your key people gain experience in a safe environment rather than the risky snake pit of the Interweb.
